Department Overview

The Department of Pharmacognosy bridges the gap between traditional medicine systems and modern science. It deals with the study of medicines or crude drugs produced from natural sources such as plants, microbes, and animals.

Our department is dedicated to the exploration of the vast medicinal flora of India, aiming to isolate, identify, and standardize active constituents for therapeutic use. We emphasize the integration of Ayurvedic principles with contemporary allopathic research.

Medicinal Plant Research

Cultivation, collection, macroscopic and microscopic evaluation of indigenous medicinal plants.

Herbal Drug Tech

Formulation and standardization of herbal cosmetics, nutraceuticals, and Ayurvedic dosage forms.

Laboratories & Facilities

Pharmacognosy Lab: Fully equipped with projection microscopes, microtomes, and camera lucida for detailed anatomical studies.
Phytochemistry Lab: Soxhlet extractors, Clevenger apparatus, and TLC setups for extraction and isolation of phytoconstituents.
Medicinal Garden: A sprawling botanical garden housing over 150 species of rare and endangered medicinal plants used for practical demonstrations.
Herbarium Museum: A curated collection of authenticated crude drugs, herbarium sheets, and models.
